Taking Digital Therapeutics Mainstream: Where are we today?
Therapeutics is the branch of medicine concerned with the treatment of disease and the action of remedial agents. Digital therapeutics (DTx) is a novel approach to treatment or therapy by a computer software program - in short called app - of proven benefit to human health instead of a chemical compound called medication. Comparably, to pharmaceutical products it can be used as therapy independently or in concert with other medications, devices, or other therapies to improve and benefit health outcomes. This benefit can come as well from optimization of patient care. Few countries have to date created a policy, regulatory, clinical, and other frameworks for digital therapeutics. Yet it is predicted that DTx has the potential to transform medicine. To reach their potential we need a process and systems as rigorous as they exist for traditional therapeutics beginning with the rigor of new medication registration in terms of evidence of effectiveness, safety, definition of treatment groups, etc. to establishment of processes and systems akin to, for example, pharmacy.
